HCUC unveils campus enhancement plans and launches Chinese Studies Education Fund

PENANG: Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) has announced the next phase of its campus enhancement project, which will integrate offices, teaching spaces, research centres, and event areas for the School of Chinese Studies to foster a vibrant learning environment.

Deputy Chairman of the Han Chiang Board of Directors Dato’ Seri Hong Yeam Wah said the Board is preparing for the development, which will include dedicated floors for the School and expanded library facilities.

“Our Board remains committed to continuous improvement whether in the quality of education, infrastructure, or resources. Han Chiang stands proudly as a beacon of Chinese education in Northern Malaysia, providing a holistic pathway from primary school to university.

“Under the leadership and strategic planning of our esteemed Executive Advisor, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Tan Kok Ping, JP, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation across the Han Chiang campus,” he said during HCUC’s 2025 convocation ceremony, yesterday.

Dato’ Seri Hong added that the completion and commissioning of the Han Chiang Secondary School Le Xue Building and the Han Chiang canopy project have provided students with spacious and well-equipped communal areas for activities and interaction.

Han Chiang Chinese Studies Education Fund Launched

HCUC also announced the establishment of the Han Chiang Chinese Studies Education Fund, an initiative aimed at nurturing future educators and advancing the preservation of Chinese education and culture.

HCUC Vice Chancellor Associate Professor Dr Beh Kok Hooi said the fund was made possible through the generous contributions of HCUC Executive Advisor Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Tan Kok Ping, JP, the Han Chiang Alumni Association, and the Penang Nanyang University Alumni Association.

“The establishment of this fund not only reflects the Board of Directors and Alumni Association’s unwavering commitment to serving society and supporting students, but also embodies the enduring dedication of Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Tan Kok Ping, JP, and the Nanyang University Alumni Association to the advancement of Chinese education,” he said.

He added that the initiative is envisioned as a catalyst to inspire broader societal support, mobilise greater resources, and ensure the sustainable growth of the fund.

Advancing Chinese Studies

This year, HCUC conferred degrees on four new recipients of the Master of Arts in Chinese Studies, with academic backgrounds spanning medicine and education.

“Their success affirms that the pursuit of Chinese Studies is not merely an aspiration or slogan, but a tangible and profoundly fulfilling accomplishment.

“We are confident that in 2026, we will welcome our first cohort of PhD graduates in Chinese Studies, marking the completion of Han Chiang's comprehensive Chinese education pathway from primary and secondary school through to undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels,” he said.

Convocation Ceremony Highlights

A total of 310 students graduated this year, comprising four Master’s graduates, 121 Bachelor’s graduates, and 185 Diploma holders from HCUC’s four academic schools.

This year’s cohort comprises four Master’s graduates, 121 Bachelor’s degree graduates and 185 Diploma holders, representing disciplines from the School of Communication and Media, School of Business and Management, School of Applied Creative Arts and Design, and the School of Chinese Studies.

Dr Beh also praised graduates from the Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Media Production and the Diploma in Mass Communication programmes, who each year generously channel the proceeds from their showcase events to provide equipment for their juniors.

“This year, the value of these contributions reached RM45,000. In addition, the School of Applied Creative Arts & Design further enriched our resources with the donation of photographic studio equipment valued at RM5,000.

“These acts of generosity exemplify not only goodwill but also a profound sense of belonging and responsibility towards Han Chiang University College of Communication,” he said.

Future Initiative

In his convocation speech, Dr Beh announced plans for HCUC to collaborate with major publishing groups to expand its digital library. The first initiative, the Books for Legacy: E-Book Donation Drive, will soon be launched to encourage graduates to contribute e-books.

“We will mark the donor’s name and graduating class on each e-book. This way, juniors borrowing them will not only gain knowledge but also feel the warmth and legacy passed down from their seniors, continuing the spirit of the Han Chiang community across generations,” he said.
